This locomotive consist was the norm for road power in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Locals would rate a single centercab. When the SD38s came, it became rare to see a switcher and an SD38; instead, two SD38s were utilized.

A typical road set leaves Waukegan, IL in March, 1974 with a train. Generally, between 20 and 40 cars would leave Waukegan on most road trains. The ruling grade out of Waukegan began here, a few yards past South Yard, and there was a fallacy that if you could get out of Waukegan, you could make it to Joliet. It was a fallacy for two reasons: one, sometimes a switcher, usually EJ&E 477 or 478, would have to shove the train out of town (the SW1s could barely bunch the slack) and, two, most road trains filled at both Rondout (Milwaukee Road interchange)and Leithton (Soo Line interchange) swelling the train to 75-100 cars or more, making the grade out of Leithton the real challenge.

EJ&E 668, an SD38-2 and the road's last new unit (all subsequent units were second hand) was delivered in solid white. The railroad applied its Bi-Centennial markings in reflective Scotchlite, but the stuff kept peeling off, so after a couple of attempts, the markings were painted on. Unlike many Bi-Centennial units, the EJ&E did not keep the scheme for long, and this March 1977 photo was the last time I ever saw it in red, white, and blue. Getting the shot at all was a study in blundering perseverence; the Joliet bound train was shot just after it had crossed the bridge over the C&NW and Sheridan Road in North Chicago. The photographer (me) had to scramble, slipping and sliding and tumbling repeatedly up and down the snow and ice covered embankment to reach a place to get a decent shot, as the bridge girders obscured the bottom half of the train while fencing and other ghetto garbage ruined the shot from ground level.

EJ&E 547 was the caboose on this ore train, which probably didn't look much like an ore train from the caboose. While the addition of the extra freight may have made the load of trains #5 or #9 lighter, this was not a classic case of combining 2 trains. If the trains were combined, then extra power would have been provided for the return leg of #5 or #9 (which would have become #6 or #10)as well as a second caboose for the rear end crew of the same train. Note that the ore cars are dipping through the Upton plant, while in the far distance, the head end is about to pass beneath the Green Bay Road (IL Route 131) overpass in Lake Bluff, IL. EJ&E End of track marker at the far northern point on the entire EJ&E. This marker was just north of Greenwood Ave. in Waukegan, IL in September 1973. North of there, the Johns-Manville plant trackage continued on and fanned into a small yard serving their plant. Now, the plant is gone; the site is vacant and all the trackage is gone; and the EJ&E track no longer crosses Greenwood. Just south of there is the former Commonwealth Edison, now Midwest Generating power plant which now marks the new north end of the EJ&E. I like to use this photo at the end of most of my slide shows, sometimes, just for effect, turning it on its side so the lettering reads across instead of down.
