The center cabs that were re-engined with Baldwin prime movers typically kept the original radiator air intake location just above the running board, this unit has them re-located half way up toward the roof.

The V-12 567C was normally rated at 1200 hp, but those installed in the EJ&E Baldwins could not be used at maximum capacity. The 567C produced its rated horsepower at around 800 rpm, but in the EMD/DT-6-6-2000's, the diesels were mated to the original Westinghouse main generators, which were designed to turn at a maximum of 625 rpm. Turning the generators any faster resulted in "lots of fireworks" (a.k.a. flash-over) inside the hood, so the EMD diesels had to be slowed down. This was not without problems; at constant low speed the diesels suffered from poor lubrication and overheating. Eventually speed settings to suit the diesels and generators were found and the repowering by EMD was considered a tolerable success. The EMD repowered units were renumbered in the 900 series.

Although I was 18 years old when I shot this photo, this was the location of my first employment as a paperboy when I was seven. This is where my paper route began. One thing for sure, there was a lot of noise as the EJ&E crossed the C&NW, especially with short wheelbase freight cars.
I talked to Bob Fox, a guy I know who worked in the tower. He did not have fond memories of his experience in that tower. Apparently, all was quiet in the tower one AM when the buzzer sounded and an EJ&E transfer run asked for permission to cross. Bob didn't see any C&NW trains asking for permission, so he allowed the EJ&E train to cross. Even in the best of conditions, the EJ&E train, which at this point was in Service Brake application, would have taken some time to get up to speed, maybe 10 mph, to cross the C&NW. According to Bob, as soon as the EJ&E train occupied the circuit, the buzzer went off, a C&NW train asking for permission to cross. Then another. Before he knew what happened another C&NW train asked for permission, and Bob was tieing up three C&NW trains, and the EJ&E train hadn't even hit the diamonds. Bob had to answer to both the EJ&E and C&NW dispatchers. He quit the railroad business a couple of weeks later.

EJ&E caboose #532, Eola, Illinois, January 15, 1966, photo by Chuck Zeiler. I was 17 when I shot this photo, but it reminds me of my pre-teen years, and I only knew of three caboose types. I grew up in West Chicago, Illinois, and became familiar with the caboose designs of the CB&Q, C&NW, and the EJ&E. My impressions were:
The CB&Q design was like a Wisconsin cabin on wheels, that is, it was a cozy cottage. I traveled briefly in the CB&Q Waycar (as cabooses were known on the Q), and it was a muffled rumble, but the smells were what made a Q waycar: it was a combination of coal heat, brake shoes, and coffee on the stove.
The C&NW car was a cold, steel, bay window cabooses that were not inviting, even though the crews were friendly.
But the EJ&E cabooses were the Cadillacs of cabooses in my neighborhood. I recall a clean burning heater and a refrigerator, I believe they were propane powered, but in any case, the EJ&E caboose impressed me the most as an eight year old railfan.

EJ&E #61007, Naperville, Illinois, November 7, 1963, photo by Chuck Zeiler. This much I recall: #61007 is spotted at Kroehler Manufacturing Company in Naperville, which made furniture, receiving loads of raw lumber set out by the CB&Q, and finished furniture was shipped by truck. Kroehler received two types of lumber, one was for shipping crates, another was for the wood used in the construction of the furniture. This car is spotted at one of the the doors for the furniture wood.
