This Caboose Roster info has been collected from various sources, and also with the help of numerous contributors. Cab numbers in orange are still in service. This is only a *known* list of cabs... There are probably some missing. Click here for an official drawing of a 500 series EJ&E caboose.

Notes: Originally #538 Damaged: 10/00 when a runaway tank car hit it on the Illinois River Line, while switching one of the chemical plants. Rebuilt: 7/01 in Joliet Shops into a special cab to be used on the Hi-Line in the Gary mills. In the rebuilt version, the windows were boarded, the rear porch extended, an air horn added, and it was then renumbered #10 and dubbed the "Hi-Liner". Status: 3/03 Still being used on the hi-line at Gary Works.

Retired: 8/03 Refurbished for the City of Whiting in time to be shown at the Whiting Railroad Days 03 event, then displayed in the city of Whiting at their park at 119th St. The dedication ceremony was 8/23/03 at the park.

Freight Car Roster
This informal roster of EJ&E rolling stock was based on rail cars that were identified by either the BNSF Railroad Equipment Characteristics database or CSXT Railcar Fleet Details database. It was assembled from a scan of all 5-digit car numbers, performed in mid-March of 2000. The mechanical designation and AAR rail car type codes are shown in parenthesis. Harold Driscoll did all of the work compiling this freight car information. There was a total of 4999 rail cars at the end of the search. Sadly, Harold passed away in June of 2000. I believe this database was one of the last projects he worked on before his passing. Apparently his railroad site will continue to exist as a tribute to his work.
