#5 (EJE)

Type: Manifest | Road: EJ&E | Route: ES | Runs: Mon-Sat | Orig: Gary, IN (Kirk Yard) | Dest: Joliet, IL | Notes: #5 is a new train as of 2003. This train is called around 5:00 AM at Kirk Yard in Gary, IN. Once the train is assembled, it heads RR West to Joliet, and sets out cars there. It may often bring extra power from Kirk back to Joliet as well, so there could often be as many as 3-5 units. Unlike the "Line Train", after they finish at East Joliet, it then continues onto Eola and sets out cars there. Depending on how many cars there are, it will either set out the cars in the small yard on the EJ&E, or they will bring the cars down into Eola Yard. Most of the cars being dropped are steel cars from USS Gary going to CA. If there's enough time, they can fill at Eola as well. They should work Eola sometime between 10:00 AM and 1:00 PM each day.

#874? (CP)

Type: Coal | Road: CP | Route: WS>ES | Runs: As Needed | Orig: Spaulding, IL (CP) | Dest: USS Gary Works, IN | Notes: There are coal trains that go to the USS coke facility that's on the East side of the USS Mills in Gary, IN. This special kind of coal is turned into coke for use in the mills. One version of this train can come onto the EJ&E at Spaulding from the CP. The CP symbol is possibly #874, and should originate from Line Creek Mine, BC. The loaded train is dropped off at a siding at Spaulding and light J power is usually sent up from Joliet to pickup the train. The train is then taken East on the J up to Kirk Yard in Gary, past the USS mills, and over to the coke facility on the East side of USS. The lead going into this area is called the "Dixie". Empties go back the same way. This version of the train from CP is usually 110-120 cars.

ACIPR (UP)

Type: Auto | Road: UP | Route: WS>ES | Runs: As Needed | Orig: West Chicago, IL (UP) | Dest: Griffith, IN (CN) | Notes: An auto train may sometimes come from UP at West Chicago and run on the EJ&E through to Griffith. AXS1 (EJE)

Type: Manifest | Road: EJ&E | Route: WS>IRL>WS | Runs: Mon-Fri | Orig: Joliet, IL | Dest: East Morris, IL | Notes: Started as of Oct. 2004, the "AXS1" (Aux Sable Switcher) is a train that runs Mon-Fri. It was added to help with some of the work the JSW1/2 does on the Illinois River Line. The train is called at Joliet around 7:00 AM. It usually brings mostly tank cars up the Western Sub, and onto the IRL. It then switches Aux Sable and A&R Plastics in the Morris area, then it returns to Joliet. "JSW1" may sometimes switch Aux Sable on Sundays.

CATWI (UP)

Type: Coal | Road: UP | Route: WS>RVB | Runs: As Needed | Orig: West Chicago, IL (UP) | Dest: Com Ed - Will County | Notes: There's coal trains that run to the Com Ed Will County Station on the J's Romeoville Branch. Coal to the generator is supplied about 50/50 by UP and BNSF. The UP trains come from their interchange at West Chicago. They then move RR East to Joliet and pass into the run-thru track in East Joliet Yard. Power then has to be switched to the West end of the train so it can be taken back up the West main and onto the Romeoville Branch. All units that run on the Romeoville Branch must have drip pans to catch fluids that might otherwise spill in the ecologically protected area of the Romeoville Branch. Once the loads are taken up to the Will County Generator, they're dropped off, and the empties are taken back to East Joliet Yard (if there are any). The plant switches the cars themselves. Loads originate from Antelope Mine, WY. UP crews for these trains are primarily provided by a pool based at West Chicago.

CBMWK (UP)

Type: Coal | Road: UP | Route: WS | Runs: As Needed | Orig: West Chicago, IL (UP) | Dest: Com Ed - Waukegan | Notes: There are coal trains that can come off the UP at West Chicago and move RR West up the EJ&E line to the Waukegan Generating Station. These trains use to go this way a number of years ago, and they had EJ&E power back then. It's unknown if these trains use this route exclusively. Loads originate from Belle Ayr Mine, WY. These trains can sometimes have DPU power. UP crews for these trains are primarily provided by a pool based at West Chicago.

Type: Coal | Road: UP | Route: WS>ES | Runs: As Needed | Orig: West Chicago, IL (UP) | Dest: Gary, IN (CSS) | Notes: Coal for Indiana is taken on at West Chicago, then bridged on the EJ&E to be interchanged with the CSS at the East end. The loads originate from Black Thunder Mine, WY and are bound for Michigan City, IN. Empties sometimes return through Proviso. UP crews for these trains are primarily provided by a pool based at West Chicago.

CBTPL (UP)

Type: Coal | Road: UP | Route: WS | Runs: As Needed | Orig: West Chicago, IL (UP) | Dest: Joliet, IL | Notes: There's coal trains that are bridged from the UP at West Chicago, to a generator that's called "Plaines", which is Southwest of Joliet off the CN/IC line. The loaded trains are brought onto the EJ&E at West Chicago, and then come East on the J to Joliet. A "window" has to be issued from Union Depot in Joliet because of the Metra traffic and such. If it's going to be a while for this window to be issued, the train can many times be left at the West Bridge Jct. siding, or even the Normantown Siding on the J. Once in East Joliet Yard, the train moves off to the West side of the yard and onto an interchange that comes down and connects with the CN/IC in Joliet. There's a small yard just west of the J's East Joliet Yard on this line that's called the 'H' Yard, that this branch passes through. At the plant, the trains used to be switched by CN/IC crews, but a new track to the generator was built to avoid the Pequot main, so the CN/IC has been cut out of the move. This was finished in early 2003, and the J crews then took over switching the empties and loads in the yard near the plant. Loads originate from Black Thunder Mine, WY. In mid 2003, these trains started having 135 cars and DPU power. UP crews for these trains are primarily provided by a pool based at West Chicago.

These trains don't happen all the time. They can go everyday for a number of days, then stop for a long time. The trains are bridged on the EJ&E, with loaded trains coming onto the J from the UP at West Chicago, and then moving West up the J main to the interchange with the CN/WC at Leithton. Empty trains do the same in reverse. The trains will normally have UP or SP power on them. Loads originate from Black Thunder Mine, WY. UP crews for these trains are primarily provided by a pool based at West Chicago.

Loads originate from Black Thunder Mine, WY. UP crews for these trains are primarily provided by a pool based at West Chicago.

These trains can sometimes have DPU power. UP crews for these trains are primarily provided by a pool based at West Chicago.

C-DKMEOS (EJE)

Type: Coal | Road: BNSF | Route: WS>ES>LFL | Runs: As Needed | Orig: Eola, IL (BNSF) | Dest: Com Ed - State Line, IN | Notes: For this train, they usually send light J power from Joliet up to Eola to get the train. The power descends down the West side of the wye into BNSF's Eola yard, and hooks up to the train. It's then brought RR East up the line to the Gary, where they then switch over to the Lakefront Line and take the train the rest of the way to the generator. The plant sits on the IL/IN State Line border off Lake Michigan. Loads originate from Decker Mine, MT.

CJRPL (UP)

Type: Coal | Road: UP | Route: WS | Runs: As Needed | Orig: West Chicago, IL (UP) | Dest: Joliet, IL | Notes: There's coal trains that are bridged from the UP at West Chicago, to a generator that's called "Plaines", which is Southwest of Joliet off the CN/IC line. At the plant, the trains used to be switched by CN/IC crews, but a new track to the generator was built to avoid the Pequot main, so the CN/IC has been cut out of the move. This was finished in early 2003, and the J crews then took over switching the empties and loads in the yard near the plant. Loads originate from Jacobs Ranch Mine, WY. In mid 2003, these trains started having 135 cars and DPU power. UP crews for these trains are primarily provided by a pool based at West Chicago.
